Nabi Yunus seorang nabi yang menganut ajaran agama Samawi (Islam, Yahudi dan Kristen). Dia ditugaskan untuk berdakwah kepada orang Assyiria di Ninawa-Iraq. Nabu Yunus adalah putra dari Matta keturunan Benyamin bin Ya’qub bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim. Kaum Ninawa adalah salah satu kaum yang sangat keras kepala, penyembah berhala dan suka melakukan kejahatan.

Oleh karena itu, kaum Ninawa tidak dapat menerimanya untuk menggantikan ajaran dan kepercayaan warisan nenek moyang. Dan pada saat itu, Nabi Yunus merupakan orang asing yang bukan dari keturunan mereka. Ajaran-ajaran Nabi Yunus tidak sedikitpun menggugah hati kaum Ninawa. Hingga keadaan ini yang membuat Nabi Yunus sangat berputus asa. Dia beranggapan bahwa tidak ada lagi kaum Ninawa untuk dapat beriman kepada Allah SWT.

Suatu hari Nabi Yunus, bersiap-siap hendak pergi meninggalkan kaum Ninawa, dia mengingatkan kaum Ninawa untuk segera bertobat karena akan datang azab jika mereka tidak segera bertobat. “Wahai kaum Ninawa, sesungguhnya aku peringatkan kepada kalian bahwa jika kalian masih tetap menyembah apa yang kalian sembah saat ini. Allah akan menurunkan azab yang sangat pedih atas diri kalian. Oleh karena itu, cepatlah kalian bertobat. Semoga Allah mengampuni kalian semua”.

Allah SWT berfirman, “Dan (ingatlah kisah) Dzun Nun (Yunus), ketika ia pergi dalam keadaan marah, lalu ia menyangka bahwa Kami tidak akan mempersempitnya (menyulitkannya), maka ia menyeru dalam keadaan yang sangat gelap: ‘Bahwa tidak ada Tuhan selain Engkau. Maha Suci Engkau, sesungguhnya aku adalah termasuk orang-orang yang zalim. Maka Kami telah memperkenankan doanya dan menyelamatkannya dari pada kedukaan. Dan demikianlah Kami selamatkan orang-orang beriman”. (QS Al-Anbya ayat 87-88).

Sepeninggal Nabi Yunus, kaum Ninawa mulai gelisah, karena seketika cuaca berubah menjadi mendung, wajah-wajah mereka berubah menjadi pucat pasi dan angin bertiup kencang yang membawa suara bergemuruh. Kaum Ninawa pun menjadi takut akan ancaman Nabi Yunus. Akhirnya mereka sadar bahwa perkataan Nabi Yunus adalah benar. Mereka kemudian beriman dan menyesali perbuatan mereka terhadap Nabi Yunus.

Kaum Ninawa lari tunggang langgang mencari Nabi Yunus dan berteriak meminta pengampunan Allah SWT atas dosa mereka. Allah SWT Yang Maha Pemaaf-pun mengampuni mereka, dan keadaan kembali seperti semula. Para kaum Ninawa tetap mencari Nabi Yunus untuk mengajari dan menuntun agama kepada mereka.

Keadaan Nabi Yunus setelah pergi dari kaum Ninawa menjadi tidak menentu. Dia pun mengembara tanpa tujuan dengan putus asa dan merasa berdosa. Akhirnya dia sampai di tepi pantai dan melihat sebuah kapal yang akan menyeberangi laut. Dia menumpang kapal tersebut, namun ketika kapal itu sedang berlayar tiba-tiba terjadilah badai yang sangat hebat. Kapal berguncang, dan para penumpang sepakat untuk mengurangi beban dengan membuang salah satu di antara mereka ke laut.

Undian pertama jatuh pada Nabi Yunus, undian kembali diulang hingga pada undian yang ketiga nama yang keluar adalah nama Nabi Yunus. Beliau tersadar bahwa itu adalah kehendak Allah, Nabi Yunus menjatuhkan diri ke laut. Allah mewahyukan kepada ikan Nun (paus) untuk menelan Nabi Yunus. Di dalam perut ikan Nun, beliau bertobat dan meminta ampun kepada Allah dan pertolongan-Nya. Dia bertasbih selama 40 hari di dalam perut ikan Nun.

“Tiada Tuhan melainkan Engkau, Maha Suci Engkau, sesungguhnya aku adalah orang yang telah berbuat zalim”.

Allah mendengar doa Nabi Yunus memerintahkan ikan paus untuk mendamparkan Nabi Yunus di tepi pantai. Allah Yang Maha Penyayang menumbuhkan pohon labu, agar Nabi Yunus yang kurus serta lemah dapat memakan buahnya agar memiliki tenaga kembali. Setelah Nabi Yunus pulih, Allah SWT memerintahkan kembali dia ke kaum Ninawa.

Setelah kembali Nabi Yunus sangat terkejut ketika melihat perubahan penduduk Ninawa yang telah beriman kepada Allah. Kemudian Nabi Yunus mengajari kaum Ninawa kitab tauhid dan menyempurnakan iman mereka. Allah SWT berfirman, “Dan Kami utus dia kepada seratus ribu orang atau lebih. Lalu mereka beriman, karena itu Kami anugerahkan kenikmatan hidup kepada mereka hingga waktu yang tertentu”. (QS As-Saffat ayat 147-148).
